Frequently Asked Questions
Rooted in the forest and guided by the seasons, The Woodlands offers a hands-on, outdoor learning experience for homeschool families. The following questions highlight the program’s approach, daily flow, and key information for those wanting to learn more.
What is The Woodlands at Moonbow
The Woodlands at Moonbow is a forest-school enrichment program for homeschool families serving children ages 5–10. Rooted in nature and guided by the rhythms of the seasons, The Woodlands offers a fully outdoor learning experience where the forest becomes the classroom. Here, learning unfolds naturally through hands-on exploration, storytelling, movement, art, and connection to the living world.
What ages do you serve?
The Woodlands welcomes children ages 5–10, grouped by developmental stage. Junior Explorers generally includes Kindergarten through 2nd grade, while Senior Explorers generally includes 3rd through 4th grade. These mixed-age groupings encourage collaboration, leadership, and mentorship among peers.
What are your hours and schedule?
Drop-off takes place from 8:30–8:40 AM, and pick-up takes place from 1:30–1:40 PM. The program runs Monday through Thursday, following a rhythm that aligns with local homeschool calendars and seasonal breaks.
What is your teacher-to-student ratio?
The Woodlands maintains a 1:5 ratio or fewer, allowing teachers to truly know each child and guide learning safely and meaningfully. These small groups help foster confidence, curiosity, and a deep sense of belonging.
What is your educational philosophy?
The Woodlands blends elements of Waldorf, Montessori, and Reggio Emilia inspiration within a forest-school framework. The approach is experiential and nature-based, with children learning by doing — climbing, building, observing, creating, problem-solving, and caring for the natural world. Through this hands-on connection to place and community, children grow in resilience, empathy, and imagination. The deepest learning happens when children feel grounded, capable, and connected — not only to knowledge, but to themselves and the earth.
How much time is spent outdoors?
The Woodlands is a fully outdoor program, and nearly the entire day is spent outside in all kinds of weather. Children explore the forest through hiking, observation, play, handwork, storytelling, and seasonal activities, building a deep and lasting relationship with the natural world.
What is the daily rhythm like?
Each day follows a predictable, nurturing flow that balances freedom and structure. Mornings begin with gathering, songs, movement, and intention-setting, followed by forest exploration through guided nature study and free discovery. The day also includes snack and storytime, seasonal art and handwork, lunch, and a closing circle with gratitude, song, and a gentle transition home. These rhythms honor both the needs of the group and the changing mood of the forest itself.
What happens in inclement weather?
In true forest-school spirit, The Woodlands welcomes rain, wind, and sunshine. Children learn to prepare for the elements and discover joy in all seasons. If severe weather or unsafe conditions arise, the program follows St. Johns and Duval County alerts and contacts families immediately regarding early pick-up or alternate plans.
What should my child wear or bring?
Children should come prepared with weather-appropriate layers, including rain gear, along with closed-toe shoes or boots for hiking and play. Families should also send a sunhat, water bottle, nourishing lunch, and a backpack for personal items and handwork projects. The Woodlands is a media-free community, including logos or characters on clothing, to support imagination and connection to the natural world.
How do you guide behavior and social development?
The Woodlands uses gentle, relationship-based guidance rooted in warmth and respect. Teachers model kindness, empathy, and self-regulation while helping children develop inner discipline and healthy communication. Conflict is approached as an opportunity to practice compassion, repair, and the skills needed for community life.
How do you communicate with families?
Communication takes place primarily through email and Brightwheel, helping families stay informed while teachers remain fully present with the children. Families may also receive updates through the Parent Council, seasonal newsletters, and special event invitations.
What is the role of parents and families?
Parent partnership is central to life at The Woodlands. Families are invited to participate through the Parent Council, seasonal festivals, classroom support, and community events. Together, these shared efforts help create a rich and connected learning village.
What are your safety and emergency procedures?
Safety is woven into every part of the day. Staff are trained in first aid and emergency preparedness, and communication is maintained through walkie-talkies and cell phones throughout the program day. If severe weather makes outdoor sheltering unsafe, parents are contacted immediately for pick-up.
How do we enroll?
Families may apply through the Brightwheel enrollment portal. Once an application is submitted, the Administrative Team confirms placement or waitlist status and shares welcome details, including orientation and supply information.
